The story centers around Giorgio, a poor son of a farmer that was living in a small village situated in the mountains known as Sonogno in Switzerland. Giorgo’s family ran into hard times when his mother broke her leg and they were not able to afford her treatment. This is where Antonio Luini brought him off from his parents and took him to Milan to work as a chimney sweeper. This is where the boy ran into other boys that were in a similar situation as him, including Alfredo. The boat in this story capsized and a lot of the boys drowned. The few that were left were sent to different houses in Milan to work as a chimney sweep.

Once in Milan, things start getting even more difficult for Giorgio as he struggled with abuse, poverty, malnutrition, and of course the dreaded health hazards that come with being a chimney sweep. Other young chimney sweepers along with Giorgio were in a group known as the Black Brothers, and this is where the title comes from. The story is a riveting one and some scenes will touch the heart of any reader.
