On Friday, June 19, 2009, some staff of the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES), hiding under the workers’ union shut down the Radio and Television stations and chased away other law abiding workers of the stations.
The action of the workers, to say the least was unprecedented in the history of broadcasting in Nigeria and the world over. Normally, workers have the inalienable rights protest in the event of dispute with their employers, but it is no doubt an absurdity for such workers to take laws into their hands by shutting down broadcast stations, which offer services to the public. The government is not unaware of the negative political influences, which led to this illegal, unconstitutional behaviour with very serious security implications and warn that it will not tolerate acts that are against the public service rules. Nevertheless, the closure of the station by the workers, illegal as it may be will afford the government the opportunity to carry out a major reorganisation of the broadcasting outfit and the government would spare no effort in making sure that the stations are repositioned to make them rank among the best in the broadcast industry. It is our expectation that the stations would come out better after the reorganisation and in line with our administration ’s quest for excellence, we have commenced the process of restructuring the BSES with a view to putting it in a better shape to deliver world class services to the people of the State and Nigerians in general. The new BSES would be one where high premium is placed on professionalism and effective service delivery and we are not going to leave any stone unturned to achieve this. All hands must therefore be on deck to make sure that Ekiti State has Radio and Television stations that would rank among the best not only in Nigeria but in the entire world. We crave the understanding of the good people of Ekiti State and Nigerians in general on this avoidable situation that has been forced upon the government by the workers. We, as a responsive and responsible government would work assiduously to reposition the BSES for better services.
Signed;
Engr. Segun Oni, Governor, Ekiti State |
