GOV. FAYOS PLEDGED TO BUILD PERMANENT NYSC ORIENTATION CAMP
Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, on Monday, March 14th, 2005 pledged to build permanent orientation camp of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ekiti State before the end of the year. The Governor made the promise while speaking at the formal opening of orientation course and swearing-in of Batch A 2005 corps members.
The state coordinator of NYSC, Deaconess Vivian Omeruo had earlier appealed to Governor Fayose to upgrade the camp through construction of more structures to accommodate both staff and corps members. "A situation whereby the school has to be closed down during orientation programmes destabilizes the school calendar, thus putting the students at a disadvantaged position, is not the best", the NYSC coordinator said, calling on the Governor to look into the matter "critically and urgently" for the benefit of both the NYSC and the school children.
Moved by the plight of the deprived students, Governor Fayose said he would ensure that a new permanent orientation camp was built for NYSC before the end of the year so that the students of the school being used temporarily for the camp would not have to be sent on compulsory holiday anytime there was to be an orientation course for corps members.
The governor reiterated his commitment to youth development and empowerment in the state. Dr Fayose stated that youths, in their prime, would always put in their best to the development of the society if encouraged and empowered.
Describing himself as an unrepentant advocate of youth empowerment, Mr. Fayose assured that he would always give youths the opportunity to exhibit their potentials for the development of the state in particular and the nation in general.

$200M TANTALITE EXPLORATION BEGINS SEPTEMBER IN EKITI

Exploration of tantalite, a solid mineral deposit found in commercial quantity in Ekiti State, will begin next month.  A Canadian Company, CME Limited and an indigenous firm, Trans Afrik Limited, are behind the project for which $200m has been set aside.

“The tapping of the mineral which is found in abundant quantity in Ijero Ekiti, will begin in September, Deputy Governor, Jacob Aluko, told reporters recently.  He said the Federal Government’s granting of the licences followed the report on a geological survey by the state government. “The result of the survey showed that the deposit of the mineral is huge in Ijero Ekiti,” Aluko said, explaining that its exploration would significantly boost the socio-economic development of the state.

FASUBA SURVIVED ASSERSINATION, FAYOSE DENIES ALLEGATION

On Saturday 11th November, 2004 some unidentified gunmen were reported to have attacked the Chairman of Ado-Ekiti Local Government, Mr. Taye Fasubaa, in his residence.  It was reported that some youths sympathetic to Fasubaa, immediately marched round the town chanting anti-government songs.  The protesting youths made bonfire in major intersections within the town and barricaded some major roads.

Fayose’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, however, absolved the state government of any complicity in the matter.    He said the disagreement between the governor and Fasubaa had been settled after the intervention of traditional rulers and other well-meaning indigenes of the state.   Adelusi stressed that Fasubaa was like a son to the governor and the governor could not have masterminded an attack on him.
The Deputy Governor, Mr. Abiodun Aluko, as well as the leadership of the state’s Peoples Democratic Party, condemned the assassination attempt on Fasubaa.   Aluko blamed the attackers for attempting to dent the image of the state with their action, and absolved the state of any linkage with the incident.

Reacting to the allegation the Governor said there was no truth in insinuation that he had hand in the murder attempt of the council Boss. Fayose who insisted that the attack was an external invasion to spoil the good name of his administration. He said he was happy that the assassin did not kill Fasuba. He further explained that he bears no animosity with Ado-Ekiti Council Boss.  However he expressed his gratitude to God for the failure of assassin. In his words, he said “but I thank God all the same that Fasubaa did not die…… This is purely an attempt to rubbish my Government” The Governor described Fasuba as one of his sons who he would not wish dead, adding that he has shown his love to the people of Ado-Ekiti in view of infrastructural facilities his administration has provided for them.

President Obasanjo said in a meeting with Gov. Fayose and Taye Fasuba, said that he was sure that he (Fayose) was not the brain behind the attack but that of his supporters who may not be happy with the manner Fasuba was behaving  to him. The President then spoke to them on the situation and assure them that peace will reign in the state at all cost.

Ekiti State House of Assembly is in full support of Gov. Fayose on relocation of Ministry

The attention of the Ekiti State House of  Assembly has been drawn to a press statement issued by Ado-Ekiti Progressive Union on Monday 7th March 2005 in reaction to the State Government’s Policy.

It is not only an affront but a total misuse of language for the union to write “Granted that for the purpose of a peaceful administration, a legislative Assembly may somehow become a tamed subsidiary of the State Executive. This statement is considered rather reckless and an abuse of intellectual prowess. For the avoidance of any doubt , the Ekiti State House of Assembly is one of the most astute, vibrant and intellectually endowed Assembly in Nigeria today considering the caliber of the elected representatives therein, in terms of age balance, experience and professionalism.

Therefore, the advice of the Union that the House should go and “repeal forthwith the law that direct the construction of Ekiti State Government Secretariat to be  erected at Afao”, is not only unwelcome but equally irrelevant. We stand solidly by the Budget passed and assented to by the Governor.

To put the record straight. Ekiti State Government is different from Ado-Ekiti Local Government. The only thing that cannot be shared with Ado-Ekiti is the State Capital which is the seat of Government but every other thing belongs to all the towns and villages in the state and can be located anywhere in the State for administrative convenience and even distribution of amenities. There is nothing unconstitutional in this.

That “the government has completed arrangement to relocate unexpectedly the State Secretariat from the State Capital” is not only misinforming, and misleading but capable of inciting the public against the government. How can one imagine the Union erroneously ascribing the construction of the Ekiti State House of Assembly to the Niyi Adebayo Administration? That alone tells us who and what interest the union represents. To correct this misleading information, all the five State created during the Abacha regime had the same assembly structure constructed for them by the same regime and Ekiti State was one of them.

Much as we don’t want to join issues with any association, we in the Assembly remain resolute and fully committed to even development of towns and villages in Ekiti State and we shall stop at nothing to ensure the actualization of this.

Incontrovertibly, Ado-Ekiti remains Ekiti State Capital and the seat of Government and nobody should be misinformed.

However, everything other things belong to the State in general and Ado-Ekiti cannot lay claim to all. The government reserves the prerogative to site any establishment in any part (town or village) of the State as long as it is I the best interest of the state and  not the selfish interest of any Political and Local Union.

It is worthy to note that Ado-Ekiti has never had it so good under any regime than the regime of Governor Ayo Fayose led administration. Within the past one and a half years, government has committed substantially the finances of the whole state (meant for sixteen Local Governments) to the development of Ado-Ekiti at the expenses of other towns and villages. The structures such as the dualisation of Ado township road (in progress) the Poultry Project, intercity roads, the poultry project, the housing unit, the rehabilitation center, the trade fair complex, the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium and the constant water supply scheme among others are there and they speak for themselves.

Finally, we wish to update the knowledge of the Union by directing them to find out what is happening in other states as regards location of Government Ministries/Departments. For the purpose of this rejoinder, Lagos Adamawa and Jigawa State will survive as examples. Besides there is no law on ground either dead or existing which states that all government structures establishments must be constructed and erected in the state capital.

We therefore advise the Ado-Ekiti Progressive Union not to make a mountain out of a molehill in order to score cheep political points as we are encouraged by the enthusiasm prayers, and support of the good people of Ado-Ekiti and we wish to allay any fears that we shall not be a party to anything that will truncate the peaceful co-existence between Ado-Ekiti and the Government of Ekiti State neither shall we focus only on Ado-Ekiti development at the detriment of other constituencies in the state.

We love Ado-Ekiti. We love its people, but we love Ekiti State and its people more.

Directorate of Information Technology, Ekiti State, Nigeria.
