| AC, ANPP LOSE AT EKITI ELECTION TRIBUNAL (08/04/08) The Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Ekiti State has struck out the petition of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) candidate, Mr. Tope Longe challenging the victory of Mr. Ayodele Michael in Oye constituency I of Ekiti State in the April 14, 2007 House of Assembly Election. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had filed a preliminary objection challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the petition and also an order striking it out having been presented outside the period of 30days stipulated under section 141 of the Electoral Act 2006.In its judgment, the tribunal averred that "By a simple calculation, the petitioners filed their petition two days outside the thirty days provided for by the section 141 of the Act."We, again refer to decisions of the court of Appeal in KVMALIA V. SHERIFF (SUPRA) and AC V. JANG (SUPRA)."In the final analysis and in view of our findings above, we hold that this petition NO. EKS/EPT/HA/11/07 was filed out of time and therefore statute barred."Consequently the preliminary objection to our jurisdiction to hear this petition succeeds and is sustained. According this petition is hereby struck out."In a similar vein, the tribunal ruled in favour of Mr. Adebayo Morakinyo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PPP) in a petition by the Action Congress candidate Mr. Dele Olatuyi who challenged his (Morakinyo) election into the State House of Assembly for Ikole I constituency of Ekiti.Morakinyo had applied for an order to strike out the petition for lack of jurisdiction having been presented outside the period of 30days stipulated under section 141 of the Electoral Act, 2006."In view of our findings set out above, we hold that this petition EKS/EPT/HA/13/07 was filed out of time and is therefore statute barred."Consequently the preliminary objection of the 1st and 2nd Respondents succeeds and is hereby sustained." SOYINKA TO DIRECT KIRIJI WAR FILM (08/04/08)Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka is to direct and act as principal consultant to the production team that would produce "Kiriji", an epic historical movie on the 19th century Yoruba Civil-War, which is being sponsored by the Ekiti State Government.Prof. Soyinka made this known during a meeting with the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Public Communications to the Ekiti State Governor, Mr Moses Jolayemi and the Producer of the Film, Chief Jimoh Aliu at Ile-Ife, Osun State over the weekend.Apart from acting in the movie, the Nobel Laureate has also agreed to write the English subtitles of the film as well as provide the Caucasian actors and actresses who would act the roles of European Colonialists in the movie.Soyinka, in consideration of the level of readiness of the State Governor, Engr. Segun Oni to roll out what may turn out to be the most celebrated epic movie that will put in proper perspective the history of the Yoruba race has also announced the suspension of his own project, which he said was also in the pipeline. He said he decided to take the offer because of the fact that the movie centres on Black History and because of the seriousness displayed by the producers and the sponsors of the movie. His words: "I don’t want to leave you with any doubt about my commitment to this project. The History of the black people is paramount to me. This is because the history of Africa has not been told by we black people but rather it has been told through the eyes of other people who use it to suit their own purposes.Prof. Soyinka who indicated his readiness to suspend some of his engagements so that the film is completed on time to enable it feature in the next edition of the Cannes Film Festival scheduled for next February in Cannes, France expressed happiness that the producer had engaged the best script writers and production crew in the country for the production of the film.He said he would work with the technical team to produce a realistic timetable and choose very good locations for the shooting of the movie "The film must be shot by the best hands and the rushes must contain all the materials to be edited because I don’t want a repeat of what happened during the production of Kongi’s Harvest, which turned out to be a wasted opportunity as we could not get enough materials from what was shot at the location," he said Also speaking, Jolayemi stressed the commitment of the Ekiti State Government to the early completion of the movie.He said the passion of Governor Oni has for culture and his commitment towards putting the history of Ekiti people in proper perspective prompted the decision of the state government to sponsor the movieApart from Soyinka, other top academia expected to feature in Kiriji include Prof. Akinwumi Ishola who is working on the script and top movie producer Tunde Kilani.The film is expected to premiere in London before the end of the year. FOREIGN OBSERVERS TO MONITOR EKITI LG POLLS (08/04/08)Ekiti State Governor, Engr. Segun Oni has said that he would invite foreign observers during the forthcoming local government elections in the state as part of efforts to ensure free and fair exercise.According to the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, Mr. Moses Jolayemi, Governor Oni while addressing thousands of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) supporters at Ido-Ekiti, in Ido Osi Local Government Area of the state said his government was committed to fairness, justice and equity.While praising PDP stakeholders for the timely resolution of various party disputes in the area, Oni noted that members of the party have a lot to gain by working in harmony.Governor Oni who charged members to rededicate themselves to the service of the state opined that only good service delivery would enable the party to maintain the popularity it presently enjoys in the state.Earlier, the state chairman of the PDP, Hon. CUBAN DOCTORS ARRIVE EKITI FOR OPHTHALMOLOGY CENTRE (08/04/08)A team of Cuban Doctors has arrived Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital for the take-off of the proposed Eye Specialist Clinic in the state.According to the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, Mr. Moses Jolayemi, the delegation led by the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Elio Savon was received by the state governor, Engr. Segun Oni has commissioned a two blocks of classrooms constructed by the Legislator representing Oye Constituency I in the House of Assembly, Hon. Michael Ayodele.Inaugurating the projects at St. Michael Primary School, Oye and St Emmanuel Primary School, Ayegbaju, Governor Oni described Hon Michael Ayodele As a worthy ambassador and charged other Legislators in the state to emulate him.The Governor reiterated that his administration was committed to improving the standard of education, adding that modern libraries, furniture and toilets would be provided in public schools.The Governor announced that 2,300 students from the various educational institutions in the state would benefit from the phase of the scholarship scheme this year.He directed Oye Local Government to complete an on-going building project St. Michael Primary School, Oye to give it a facelift.The Governor also directed that the dilapidated classrooms at St Emmanuel Primary School, Ayegbaju be pulled down, adding that another block of six classrooms would be constructed.In his remarks, Hon. DEPUTY GOVERNOR WARNS CONTRACTORS (04/04/08)The Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Dr. Sikiru Lawal has warned contractors in the state to work according to specifications or have their contracts revoked.Lawal who gave the warning while speaking with newsmen in Ado, expressed displeasure over the carefree attitudes of some contractors stressing that government would not hesitate to re-award the jobs to other contractors.He explained that the abolition of mobilization fee was to prevent wastage saying government is still running after many contractors who had collected such fee in the past but failed to perform.Lawal explained that government was determined to make all roads in the state motorable through its road revolution project worth twenty billion Naira. EKSG SIGNS MOU ON FOUNTAIN HOTEL TO RESUSCITATE MORIBUND COMPANIES (04/04/08) A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the State Government and Consolidated Alliance Limited for the management of Fountain Hotel.The Commissioner for Commerce, Industry, Cooperative and Tourism, Mr. Dare Omotoso who signed on behalf of the State Government, lauded the efforts of the government to resuscitate moribund industries.The Commissioner added that the Company would be leased out for an initial period of ten years (10 years) after which the contract may be renewed. AGRIC COMMISSIONER PROMISES TO REPAIR BOREHOLES AT CATTLE MARKET (04/04/08)The Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Prof. Akin Omotayo has promised to install a submersible pump and repair the boreholes at the cattle market and abattoir centre in Ado.Omotayo made the promise during an inspection tour to the abattoir.The Commissioner urged the cattle sellers to co-operate with the government so that the objective of public health sector could be achieved.He warned the public to desist from vandalizing government properties, saying that anybody caught would face he wrath of the law.The Commissioner promised that government would recruit guards to ensure the security of the facilities. ONI SIGNS MOU WITH FOREIGN AGRICULTURAL FIRM (02/04/08) Ekiti State Governor, Engr. Segun Oni has signed a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) with foreign firm for production of milk and other dairy products at Ikun Diary Farm. The Governor, who signed the MOU in Ado, said the Diary farm would be known as “Fountain Dairy Product Farm Limited” and would be one of the biggest assets of the government. Governor Oni expressed hope that farm would trigger agricultural revolution adding that other industries such as Ire Burnt Brick, ROMACO and Fountain Motel would soon begin to generate revenue for the state. He presented the management of the farm a car to ease its transportation problems. Responding, the Managing Director of the firm, Mr. Jan Hapburn noted that Ekiti has what it takes to be food basket of the nation. He announced that Ikun Diary farm is expected to start making profit within 24 months of the operation and provide employment for seven hundred persons. AGRIC. COMMISSIONER WARNS FOREST GUARDS (02/04/08) The Ekiti State Commissioner for Agricultural and National Resources, Prof. Akin Omotaya has warned forest Guard against hardbouring Indian hemp sellers in the government forest reserve. Prof. Omataye gave the warning while addressing the staff of the Forestry Department of the Ministry at in Ado. The commissioner said any guard caught in the act would face the wrath of law He said as part of the measuring to curb the menace, the officer were compelled to swear to the oath of office. Omatayo assured them that necessary facilities would be provided to enhance their performance. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Ropo Famubode urged the staff of the Forestry Department to take their jobs seriously and shun acts could mar the progress of the ministry. Mr.Famubedo, who said government is spending so much, urged them to reciprocate the gesture with hardwork. EKSG COMPLETES ECOLOGICAL PROJECTS (02/04/08) Fifteen ecological projects have been complete in Ekiti State between March 2007 to March 2008. Then General Manager, State Environmental Protection Agency, Mr. Olusola Oguleye gave the information in Ado. According to him, three of such project in Ado, three at Ipoti and seven at Efon-Alaye adding that the engineering studies of five other ecological sites at Ado, Okemesi, Iworoko/Ifaki, Otun/Ikere, Ilawa/Igede are being carried out to determine how to curb flooding and erosion menace. Ogunleye said the project was made possible because of the interest of the State Government and intervention of Federal Government. He said the two on going projects at Ajagbara, Ipoti-Ekiti and Igbo-Eegun Efon will be complete soon. The General Manager however called on the people to complement the efforts of both the Federal and State Governments by desisting from acts that could lead to erosion and flooding. EKSG SINGS MOU FOR BIOFUEL PLANT (31/03/08)Ekiti State Government has signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) for the establishment of an $ 80 million biofuel plant at IIemeso in Oye Local Government areas.Speaking at the ceremony in Ado, Governor Segun Oni said the event was a step forward in actualizing the vision of his administration to transfer Ekiti into a highly productive and economically vibrant state. He said the plant would produce ethanol and generate electricity. Oni announced that construction work had commenced on the Ijan/IIemeso road adding that government would also construct another road to link IIemeso with Iyemero in Ikole local government area. He said government would sink two boreholes to boast water supply in the host community. Earlier in his address, the Managing Director of Global Biofuel Ltd, Dr. Felix Obada said the plant would generate electricity and produce ethanol from sweet sorghum as well as provide direct employment for 8,000 workers and indirect employment for 50,000 people respectively.He stated that the foundation stone of the plant would be laid within the next three months while the plant was expected to be completed within the 21 months. MRS ONI CALLS FOR REVIVAL OF YORUBA CULTURE (31/03/08)The wife of Ekiti State Governor Mrs. Kemi Oni, has advocated the revival of the Yoruba culture.Mrs. Oni made the call in Ibadan at the launching of an album entitled “Odu’a Children Come” by Jimi Solanke.The wife of the governor, who was represented by the wife of the Deputy governor, Mr. Yemisi Lawal Lamented that Yoruba culture was gradually loosing its originality and needed to be resuscitated. She described Yoruba Culture as dignifying adding that it must not be allowed to go into extinction.Mrs. Oni said the learning of the Yoruba language should be compulsory in the schools particularly in the South-West to ensure that the language did not so into oblivion. In his remarks, the producer of the Album, Mr. jimi Solanke, appreciated God for the successful of production of musical work. He explained that he took up the project because of the important of Yoruba Culture and the need to preserve it. Also Speaking, Professor Akinwumi Ishola, said the production of the Album was borne out of the need to reach out to children on the important of Yoruba Culture. PETROLEUM CONSUMER PROTECTION AGENCY ASSURES OF FUEL SUPPLY (31/03/08)Residents in Ekiti State have been advised not to panic over the fuel scarcity being witnessed in some part of the country. The Chairman, State Petroleum Consumer Protection Agency, Alhaji Ademola Bello gave the advice while monitoring of supply of Petroleum products to the state.Bello observed that some petrol station had run out of the stock noting that the scarcity was due to the Easter holidays. He expressed dissatisfaction with petroleum dealers under dispensing the product and warned them to desist from the act He said that the government has put in place measures to ensure availability of fuel..Bello called on the people to report petroleum dealers hoarding or selling above the pump price to the Agency ONI REITERATES COMMITMENT TO PRUDENT MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES (31/03/08)Ekiti State Governor, Engr. Segun Oni has reiterated the commitment his administration to the prudent management of the state financial and material resources.Oni who presents three new Toyota Hiace Buses to the Students’ Union Government of the University of Ado-Ekiti (UNAD), College of Education, Ikere and Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti said the government would not expend state funds on family used vehicles.The Governor explained that the buses were part of the 44 vehicles produced under bill one of the contract agreements on the 27 road projects.The Governor Oni said his administration has not borrowed money from any financial institution since assumed office and stated that government was not owing any contractor for jobs executed.He urged the students to make good use of the vehicles, pledged the commitment of his administration to development of the youths as well as the education sector.Responding, the Acting Vice Chancellor of UNAD, Prof. Dipo Kolawole expressed appreciation to Governor Oni for donating the buses to the Students’ Unions of the tertiary institutions in the state. EKSG TO ESTABLISH 180 BLUE HOSPITALS (31/03/08)The Ekiti State Government is to establish 180 blue hospitals to cater for maternal and child health in the State. The Health Commissioner, Dr. Femi Thomas made this known during visit to the Comprehensive Health Centre, Are where a renowned Ekiti born medical practitioner, Professor Olufemi Elegbeleye is organizing a-3-day free clinic for the people.Thomas said that the hospital would be painted in blue colour to enable people identify them easily as centre for maternal and child care.The Commissioner commended Professor Elgbeleye for assisting his people through the private public partnership policy of the Segun Oni administration stressing that state Government was ready to collaborate with individuals and corporate bodies to take the health system to enviable heights.Elegbeleye explained that he was in the state to run free clinical services to complement the laudable achievements of Governor Segun Oni in the health sector.The renowned Professor of Medicine who also rendered free clinical services at the UNAD Teaching Hospital, Ado assured that the programme would be a continuous exercise.He described Dr. Femi Thomas and Dr.(Mrs.) Bolanle Fakunle as assets to Ekiti State and enjoined Ekiti people to support the Segun Oni administration. GOV. ONI PROMISES TO IMPROVE WORKERS WELFARE (31/03/08)The present administration has reiterated its determination to improve the welfare of workers in the state. The State Governor, Engr. Segun Oni made the assertion while declaring open the quarterly Civil Service lecture in Ado.Oni who was represented by the Special Adviser on Political Matters, Hon Obafemi Adewale stated that as part of efforts to improve worker’s welfare government has increased the salaries and financial benefits of public servants.The government added that the office project inherited from past administration has been completed while additional six buildings would be completed soon to ease accommodation problems faced by workers.In his address, the Head of Service, Mr. Olufemi Adewumi commended the administration according priority to workers welfare.Adewumi urged civil servants to reciprocate the good gesture of the administration by being dedicated and committed to duty.The Permanents Secretary, Office of Establishments and Training, Mr. Leken Aiyeleso expressed appreciation for approving workshops for public servants. Click here to read full lecture EKSG TO RECRUIT 4000 WORKERS (31/03/08)Ekiti State Government has concluded arrangements recruit 4,000 workers. The Head of Service, Mr. Olufemi Adewumi dropped the hint while answering questions from newsmen in his office.Adewumi said that the recruitment exercise would be highly competitive so as to inject capable hands into the public service for effective service delivery. He explained that the take-off exercise is being delayed so as to allow government plan properly to forestall lapses that were associated with previous recruitments.Adewumi announced that 1000 workers each would be recruited by the Civil Service Commission, Teaching Service Commission, State Universal Basic Education and Local Government Service Commission, adding that the exercise would be on yearly basis.Commenting on the restructuring at the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES), he stressed that those sanctioned were guilty of certificate forgery, declaring productivity and untoward attitude.The head of Service said that the restructuring exercise would be extended to Ministries and Parastatals, adding that it had taken place at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Water Corporation. He denied that the exercise is to witch hunt stressing that it was is necessary to effect a positive change in the public service. EKSG VOWS TO RID STATE OFF DRUG PEDDLERS (31/03/08)The Ekiti State Government has vowed to rid the state of drug peddlers to project the future of the youths. Governor Oni Made the pledged while presiding over the public destruction of Eight four tones of India Hemp estimated at one Hundred and Forty Eight million Naira (N148m) at Ise.Seven thousand bags of the commodity were discovered by the National Drug law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Ise.The Governor, who was represented by his Deputy, described the development as sad and warned the drug peddlers to stay clear of the state.One charged traditional rulers, Chiefs and Community leaders to always monitor the activities of their tenants and warned that anybody farming around where Indian hemp is being cultivated would be prosecuted.He commended the NDLEA for a job well done and assured the Agency of government support.The governor announced that, a federal high Court will soon commence sitting in the state, to facilitate quick trial of drug traffickers.Earlier, the national chairman of NDLEA, Alhaji Ahamadu Giade who was represented by the Director of Investigation and Operations, Alhaji Baba Useni described the quantity as the largest seizure in the country and assured that the Agency will curb the activities of drug peddlers, traffickers and barons in the country.The NDLE State Command Mr. Ben. Ikani assured the people that, the owners of the consignment who are still at large would be caught and prosecuted.He said, twenty suspects, including a female would soon be charged to court on drug traffickers while seven people had been rehabilitated in the State. EKSG EXPRESSES DISSATISFACTION OVER ROAD PROJECTS (31/03/08)Ekiti State Governor, Engr. Segun Oni has expressed dissatisfaction over the slow pace of work and the quality of jobs on road projects. Oni made the remark at the third meeting with Contractors and Consultants, in Ado.Governor Oni said the administration would not tolerate shoddy jobs, adding that, the money spent on construction and rehabilitation of roads was from the tax prayers which must be judiciously spent. He warned that contractors should not deviate from specification, stressing that Government will take drastic measures against defaulters.The Governor gave the assurance that any contractor who delivered quality job would automatically qualify for the second phase without tendering for such contracts.Oni appealed to all stake holders on road projects to handle their jobs seriously adding that any contractor, who could not deliver as expected, would have his contract terminated.The Deputy Governor, Dr. Tai Lawal, Speaker Femi Bamisile, Chief of Staff, Barr. EKSG TO DISBURSE N40M LOAN (31/03/08)Ekiti State Government is to disburse N40M (Forty Million Naira) as loan to communities under the mentor programme within the next two weeks.The Director General, Ekiti State Micro Credit Agency, Mr. Cyril Fasuyi made the announcement during the distribution of cheques to beneficiaries of micro credit loans in Ilawe-Ekiti.Fasuyi said arrangement has been concluded to disburse loan in Efon, Ijesa Isu, Ire, Usi, Omuo, Ijurin and Ido-Ekiti.The Micro Credit boss assured that government was ready to improve the lives of the people through the Micro credit Loans and Schemes.He added that the Agency is working on “Cement Selling and Recharged Card Empowerment Scheme” to reduce the cost of the materials and provide job opportunities.The Director General explained that Hon. Jide Egunjobi applied to the Agency to stand surety as mentor for 67 people in the town which amount to N2m and was granted.Fasuyi urged them to spend the money judiciously and appealed to them to pay promptly.Two beneficiaries Mr. Giwa Olufemi, and Mrs. Grace Temilade commended the government for the gesture and promised to pay promptly. WAEC BLACKLISTS TWO PRIVATE SCHOOLS (31/03/08)The West African Examination Council has blacklisted Olivet High School, Omuo-Ekiti and liberty international Science College, Ido-Ekiti, for examination malpractice.According to a letter from the WAEC, the Olivet high School is bound from presenting candidates for WAEC/SSCE for he next three years while liberty international is restrained for the next two years.The two school have been closed down indefinitely by the State Government while SSCE candidates have been moved to another centre. |
