The Ministry of Works and Transport is the arm of the Government of Ekiti State charged with the responsibility for the formulation and implementation of policies on roads construction of and public buildings.

Consequent upon the above, the activities of the Ministry affect the lives and welfare of the citizenry in one‑way or the other. The programme of the ministry have impact and influence on the physical economic, social and infrastructural development of the State.

 

CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

The Civil Engineering Department of the Ministry of Works and Transport is responsible for the construction/rehabilitation of roads either by direct or contract.  It is also in charge of outline maintenance of State roads. The maintenance activities include cutting of verges, patching of potholes, repairing of failed portion, grading of earth roads, clearing of drains and culverts, replacing culvert and bridge furniture etc.

 

ROAD CONSTRUCTION/REHABILITATION

The Civilian Government of Ekiti State has since assumption of office in 1999 demonstrated its commitment to provision of infrastructure, particularly roads, by committing fund to on‑90ing road projects it inherited from the preceding military administration on one hand and on the other hand developed strategies for achieving her developmental objectives decided to embarked upon the following roads projects, some of which has been commissioned while others are still under construction.

 

CONDITION OF THE ROAD

The following conditions characterized the under listed roads before the award of the contract for its construction/rehabilitation.

 

1.       Some of these roads was in a deplorable state, riddled with potholes at different dimension over the years in

           addition to overgrown verges and corrugations which impeded free flow of traffic.

2.       Some was too narrow, just like a narrow path that passes through a very thick forest.

3.       Some had become almost impassable due to continuous flooding of the road as a result of in adequate drainage

           structures at the valley.

4.       Other section of the road had been reduced to earth road due to frequent grading.

Considering the urgency and high level of finishing required of the roads, His Excellency, Governor Fayose approved a list of nominated contractors who have been found qualified and competent in road construction to tender for the construction of the 4 (Four) roads from the list.

 

BUILDING DEPARTMEN

The Department is responsible for the following duties in the Ministry.

 

          a.       Planning, programming and design of new projects relating to public buildings and keeping statistics of

                    same.

          b.       Carrying out all maintenance works on existing public buildings.

          c.       Administration and supervision of all building construction jobs either by direct labour or contract in

                    the Ministry.

          d.      Preparation of estimates and bills of quantities and vetting of same for consultants/contractors in respect

                   of projects for either direct or contract execution.

                                                                                                                                

PROJECTS EXECUTED

 

Some of the projects carried out during the period under review are as listed below:

 

Liaison Office Abuja, Speakers House, Legislators Quarters, Presidential Lodges, Deputy Governors Residence, Presidential Suite, Chief Judge Quarters, Government House etc.

 

          The Department has been able to affect the lives of the citizenry through the following ways:

 

*    Provisions of Office and Residential accommodation for Government and Public Officials.

*    Maintaining Government Offices to create conducive environment for the users.

  Provisions of accommodation for special services such as: Cultural Centre, State Mortgage Bank, Fountain

      Motel etc.

*    Rendering of consultancy services to other Government Department in the State.

         

FUNCTIONS OF FIRE SERVICES DEPARTMENT

The Department of Fire Services in the Ministry of Works and Transport has its Headquarters in Ado‑Ekiti, with eight Fire Stations spread all over the State. The eight Stations are in Ikole, Ikere, 1jero, Aramoko, Ise, Ido, Efon and 0muo.

 

The Department is responsible for fighting Fire outbreaks and undertaking other rescue operations especially where there are accidents such as people falling into wells, ponds or rivers, rescue from collapsed buildings air craft crashes etc. Also it carries out the inspection of business premises with a view to advising on safety measures.

The Department also organizes lectures for Government Establishments, Hospitals, Schools and Parastatals in the State on Safety procedures and measures.

 

Since the present Administration i.e. 29th May 2003 to 31st March, 2004 the department has attended to a total 51 Fire calls and 22 special services. In all the incidents, 11 lives were lost while about 33 lives rescued. An estimated loss of about N32.2 Million was recorded while properties worth W80.8 Million were save from destruction.
