BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MINISTRY
The former commission for Women became a full‑fledged Ministry in 1997 and was known as the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in August 2000, Since its inception, the Ministry has vigorously pursued programmes in the areas of Social Integration, Economic Empowerment and Political Emancipation of Women. More recently, it also facilitates the development of our Youth to meet future challenges of leadership through various programmes.
 

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

*  The Department compile reports of activities of other Departments within the Ministry whenever needed or

     requested.

* The Department represents the Ministry regularly at the monthly meeting of the "State Consultative Committee

    on Statistics.

* The Department also represents the Ministry at the Technical committee on Population Activities.

* The Department has prepared a pro‑forma form to be distributed to all local Governments in the state for

    statistical compilation of un‑employed Youths in the state in a way to facilitating Youth Empowerment.

 

STRATEGIES FOR PROGRAMME IMPLEMENTATION

A suitable strategy had been designed by this department, which focuses attention on the enhancement of grassroots Self‑Help Development efforts in line with government policy objectives on rural development. Under this dispensation, the entire state is divided into four (4) operational zones. Each zones supervises Community Development activities in four (4) Local Government Areas. In each zone, the field staff of this Department work in close collaboration with Community Development staff in the Local Governments particularly on initiation of projects meeting with various Community Development Association, Projects Committee and inspection of Self‑Help Projects.

a.    Education and stimulation of individuals and groups to accept change for the betterment of

       themselves and their standard of living.

b.    Assisting in minimizing the rural‑urban drift through provision of basic needs/infrastructure at

       the grassroots level.

c.    Mobilising and encouraging Communities to embark on Communal

d.    Coordinating the activities of Community Development Associations in all Towns and Villages,

       Community Development Committee and Community Development Council in both Government

       and State levels

e.    Media Projection of Community Self‑Help Projects.

f.     Monitoring and evaluation of programme and activities of Non-Government and voluntary

        organizations geared towards Community Development in the State.

g.    Co‑ordinating the activities of the various Communities raising funds through their Annual

        Town Day Celebrations.

 

BEE KEEPING PROJECT

33 beneficiaries from 15 Communities in 15 Local Government areas have been sensitized and equipped with Modern Beekeeping techniques and tools since year 2001 till date.

 

The Ministry has been monitoring the project sites in the project communities and the dividend of the project is the harvest of 490 litres of honey by the bee farmers in the year 2004 harvest period
