HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The early stage of potable water supply in Ekiti land dates back to 1951 when the first water scheme was constructed at Efon Alaaye. Incidentally, this remained the only scheme up till Nigeria gained independence in 1960 – the year another mini water scheme was commissioned at Okemesi Ekiti.

The Western Nigeria Water Corporation was established in April 1967 to cater for water supply in the then Western Region of Nigeria. With the creation of Ondo State along with others on February 3, 1976, the Ondo State Water Corporation took off first with the Headquarters in Ondo town before its later movement to Akure, the Ondo State Capita in 1987. thus, policy and management issues on water supply in Ekiti land emanated from Akure up till September 1996.

However, the ruling Military Government created Ekiti State on October 1, 1996, giving room for the establishment of Ekiti State Water Corporation and brining direct management of water supply services to Ado-Ekiti, the State Capital. The Corporation now operate from its Headquarters at No 11, Waterworks Road, Ado-Ekiti.

EDICT AND ROLES OF THE CORPORATION
The objectives and roles of Ekiti State Water Corporation as provided for in the Edict establishing the Corporation are:
(i)                  To control and manage all waterworks under the Edict establishing the Corporation:

(ii)                To establish, control, manage, extend and develop such waterworks and to extend and develop such existing ones as the Corporation may consider necessary for the purpose of providing water in order to meet the requirement of the general public, trade and industry in various parts of the State.

(iii)               To organize and conduct comprehensive research for the use of the Corporation from time to time on matters relating to its functions under the Edict and to submit, on request, the result of such research to the appropriate quarters for utilization of the same in formulation of policy relating to the supply and usage of water in the State; and

(iv)              To make arrangements and enter into agreements which any person, department, or office of the Government or any of its members, officers, employees, servants, or agents, etc, for the making arrangements and enter into agreements which any person department, or office of the Government or any of its members, officers, employees, servants, or agents, for the exercise, performance or provision by that person, department, office and agent as agent for the Corporation or any of the functions, service, or facility which may be exercised, performed or provided by the Corporation under the Edict.

Like most of Nigeria’s Southern State, Ekiti State has its won share of abundant surface water resource. Some of the most important rivers are: Ero, Little Osse, ele, Ureje, Ogbese, Oni, Ada, Oshun, Owuruwuru, Obiba, Ilegbewa, Olutokin. Four dams at Ikun, egbe, Ado-Ekiti and Itapaji provide large water storage. Ground water resources is limited quantities are tapped through faults e.g. at Ikere-Ekiti or in shallow water tables.

INHERITED WATER SUPPLY SCHEMES

At this inception, Ekiti State Water Corporation inherited eight Water Supply Scheme from the former Ondo State. The total installed capacity of these schemes is 1982,530 cubic metres per day only 10% of this value is currently being supplied to the people as a result of old age and consequent incessant breakdown of the water supply schemes and epileptic power supply from NEPA.

The schemes inherited by Ekiti State Water Corporation in 1996 are listed hereunder.

(a)    The existing High Grade Water Supply Schemes are:

(i)                        Ero Water Supply Scheme
