| BRIEF HISTORY With the creation of Ekiti State in October 1, 1996, the Ministry of Health was among the few Ministries established. At creation, it was christened as Ministry of Health and Social Services. The Ministry is charged with the responsibility of formulating, implementing and evaluation of health policies at the primary, secondary and tertiary Health Care levels. FUNCTIONS1. Provision of medical equipment for all the state health institutions 2. Provision of adequate drugs and dressings in the State Health Centers and Hospitals 3. Control of the sale of dangerous drugs and narcotics 4. Ensuring environmental and water sanitation, screening of food handlers and routine laboratory diagnosis 5. Execution of Dental Health policy and services 6. Carrying out of Health Plans through the development of health statistics and research programmes 7. Giving direction to Non-Governmental Organization (NGOs) in the areas of the promotion and development 8. Serving a liaison between the federal and local governments as well as International Organizations which are connected with the provision of health services.
DEPARTMENTS IN THE MINISTRY OF HEALTHFinance and Administration (F&A) This department is responsible for the management of Human and Material Resources of the ministry. FUNCTIONSi. Preparation of the Ministry’s Budgetary Estimates ii. Control of the Ministry’s Capital and Recurrent votes iii. Rendition of Reports of the ministry’s activities iv. Monitoring of revenue generation of the ministry v. Maintenance of office equipment, plants, vehicles and buildings vi. Execution of ministry’s capital projects vii. Appointment, Promotion and discipline of staff.
Planning Research and StatisticsThis department is responsible for planning research and collation of statistical data aimed at keeping adequate records necessary for the Health Care Delivery System in the state. The department prepares the annual capital project estimates and the Rolling Plans in conjunction with the Finance and Administration Department and monitors ongoing projects of the ministry. Nursing ServicesThis department is the policy organ in all matters concerning Nursing Education and Services in the state. Food Drugs Administration and Control (Pharmacy) This department is responsible for the control and administration of food drugs and formulation of other Pharmacy related matters in the state. Drug Production Unit Hospital Services and Training (HS&T) Functions i. Registration, Monitoring and Inspection of Private Health Institutions ii. Monitoring and Inspection of Public Health Institutions iii. Supervision of Staff Clinics iv. Dental Health Education v. Supervision of Traditional Medicine Board vi. Processing of medical/financial assistance for the needy through the state Medical Board. Primary Health Care (PHC) Functions i. PHC policy formulation and implementation at the state and local government areas. ii. Coordinates PHC and Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) activities at the state and LGAs. iii. Provision of technical assistance for human resource development at the LGAs. iv. Collaborate with other health related ministries and parastatals. v. Collaborating the, and seeking assistance from the Federal Ministry of Health and other United Nation Agencies. vi. Monitors, supervise and evaluates PHC implementation of the 16 council areas. vii. Implements immunization policies of the government
Disease Control (DC) This department is responsible for the following: i. Emergency preparedness and Response ii. Guinea Worm eradication and Public Health Laboratory iii. Onchoreciasis (River Blindness) Control iv. Malaria and Vector Control v. STD/HIV/AIDS vi. Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control (TBL)

Provision of Ambulance for State Specialist Hospital, Ado-Ekiti. 5. Enlightenment campaign against the scourge of HIV/AIDS in Ekiti State. 6. Donation of 80milion Naira Administrative block to University of Ado-Ekiti (UNAD) College of Medicine to enable it takes off. 7. Donated 320 beds to al Health Centers in the 16 Local Government areas. 8. Sank boreholes at the State Specialist Hospital, Ado-Ekiti. 9. Free surgery for people with physical disabilities. 10. Establishment of a Psychiatry unit at the State Specialist Hospital, Ado-Ekiti 11. Embarked on capacity building of Health Workers against Female Genital Mutilation. 12. Provision and supply of free Insecticide Treated Nets (ITN) and Cotecxin to roll back Malaria. 13. Grassroots healthcare delivery through Health Rangers Scheme 14. Achieved over 100 percent immunization of children against the six killer diseases. 15. Donated N3Million to Mr. Jide Alabi for his medical treatment. |
