The Ministry of Education officially took off from the temporary site of the College of Education Ikere-Ekiti along side the Teaching Service Commission which took off at the Better Life Center, Ikere‑Ekiti in October, 1996.

The ministry operated at Oke-Ikere site with four professional/ administrative Departments namely:

i.                     Schools Dept.,

ii.                    Evaluation and Standard Dept.,

iii.                  Inspectorate Dept.,

iv.                  Finance and Administration Dept.

 

In 1998, these Department's were restructured into 5 with a split from SSS Dept to Science, Technology, and Mathematics Department as well as and Planning, Research and Statistics Department.

 

The Ministry now has 5 professional Departments each one is headed by a Director. There is one Administrative Department comprising Internal and External units. There is the accounts section/stores and Education endowment office is annexed within the Ministry and quite effective.

 

The Ministry of Education is supported by 5 different parastatals namely:

                 i.             TSC                          Teaching Service Commission

                 ii.            SPEB                        State Primary Education Board

                 iii.           BTVE                     Board for Technical and Vocational Education

                 iv.          Agency for Adult and Non‑Formal Education.

                 v.           Library Board.

 

The Ministry also has four Government Colleges as Centers of excellence and they serve as Demonstration Schools to other public Secondary Schools in the state.

 

The three newly established Science Colleges located at Iyin, Ayede and Emure are to improve the scientific know‑how and Technological base of our State.

 

Consequent upon the other demands as per paragraph 2(b), (c) and (d) the Ministry of Education is poised to suggest that fund be made available in order to explore the areas of need vis‑a‑viz the following areas:

i.            The nomadic Education, which involves taking pictures and other necessary diagrams on the field.

ii.           Improvisation of teaching materials as provided for by Science Equipment Center.

iii.          Projects designed by the students and teachers during JETS programmes.

iv.          Other programmes like, HETAN, STAN, NAT and initiated programmes under STM Department of the

              Ministry of Education.

 

 

ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE PRESENT ADMINISTRATION ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE AYO FAYOSE ADMINISTRATION SINCE MAY, 2003 TO MAY, 2004

 

One of the priorities of the Ayo Fayose's Administration is a strong focus on the provision of qualitative Education in the State.

A. QUALITY CONTROL

Consequently, the State Government organized Education Summit in November, 2003 and thus embarked on participatory approach to her education policies.  All Stakeholders were involved in formulating education policies in Ekiti State and now are involved in the implementation of education policies.

                The fall out of the National Policy of Education.

i.                     Implementation of National Policy of Education

ii.                    Stopped of automatic promotion in all Primary and Secondary Schools.

iii.                  Introduction of afternoon prep in all Public Secondary Schools.

iv.                  Re-Introduction of boarding system in public Secondary Schools in the State.

v.                   Empowering the Inspectorate arm of the Ministry thereby having frequent and improved advisory inspection visits to schools to ensure qualitative teaching and learning.

vi.                  Stakeholders’participation in the funding of education in the State.

vii.                Promotion of teachers to be based on performance and merit with GL.16 Principals who have exceptional performance to be appointed as Permanent Secretaries.

viii.               Constitution of Curriculum development Committee as well as Monitoring and Implementation Committee on education.

ix.                   Review of Curricular for Primary and Secondary Schools.

x.                    Developing HIV/AIDS Programmes for the State.

 

B.  EMPLOYMENTS

Five hundred primary schools teachers were employed while 28 indigenes of the State deployed from Ondo State were absorbed into the service of the State with the payment of their one year salary arrears and leave bonus totaling N8.6 million.  One hundred and Ninety nine teaching staff including day and night guards were recruited into the Secondary Schools.

 

C. STAFF WELFARE

i.                     One thousand three hundred and seventy four (1,374) primary school teachers were promoted in the primary schools.

ii.                    N2 million was released for disbursement to teaching and non-teaching staff as housing and car loans in secondary schools.

iii.                  Nine staff quarters at a cost of N41,225 million were constructed  to provide accommodation for teachers in the rural areas located in the following towns:

a.             Ilemeso                  -               Oye Local Government

b.             Ogotun                  -               Ekiti South West

c.             Obada                    -               Ise/Orun Local Government

d.             Erijiyan                  -               Ekiti West

e.             Ilupeju – Ijan         -               Gboyin

f.              Oke-Ako                -               Ikole

g.             Ejiko                       -               Irepodun/Ifelodun

h.             Ijero                        -               Ijero

i.              Ipere                       -               Ilejemeje

               

D.  PROVISION OF INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES IN SCHOOLS

i.                     Procurement and distribution of Instructional materials worth N18.5 million were made to primary schools and Science Equipment to the three Government Science College at Iyin, Emure, and Ayede Ekiti at a total cost of N1 million.

ii.                    There was a provision of Continuous Assessment material worth N2.391,100 for use in the primary and post primary schools.

iii.                  Construction of Eight long benches were distributed to the Four Government Technical Colleges in the State.

 

E.  STUDENTS’ WELFARE AND SCHOLARSHIP

i.                     Arrears of N10 million was released as bursary award to Ekiti State Students in tertiary institutions for year 2001/2002 session.

ii.                    Scholarship worth N2,335,000 was disbursed for disabled students in the two special schools at Ido and Ikere Ekiti.

iii.                  Similarly, a sum of N1,704,600 was spent as feeding and maintenance grant on students at the two special schools in Ido and Ikere

iv.                  There was a provision of a – 150 Seater Bus to ease transportation problems of the students of UNAD.

 

F.  PROVISION OF PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

a.                    Provision of four lecture theatres for students’ use at the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti and UNAD respectively.

b.                   Provision of 350 KVA Transformer to boost electricity supply at the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti.

c.                    Provision of Amusement park to further enhance recreational activities at the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti.

d.                   Provision of  Bore hole to reduce problem of water shortage at the Secondary School located at College of Education Compound, Ikere Ekiti.

e.                    Provision of 5 blocks of Hostels to ease accommodation problems at the College of Education. Ikere.

f.                     Provision of lecture Room for Fine Art Students at the College of Education, Ikere.

g.                   The construction of a library building and a Hall at UNAD is in progress.

h.                   Construction of extension building for the State Library.

 

G.  EXAMINATIONS

i.                     Payment of the back-log of N47,217,800 owed by the last Administration to NECO as examination fees for our students who sat for the June/July 2003 NECO Senoir School Certificate Examination.

ii.                    Released the sum of N18,935,000 Naira for various State Examinations in the Primary and Secondary Schools.

iii.                  Procure Science equipments, six hundred chairs and lockers for the conduct of the May/June 2004 SSCE Examinations at the Government Continuing Education Centres in the State.

iv.                  Established 32 Basic Literacy Centres across the State.

 

H. ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW SCHOOLS

a.         Two new Secondary Schools were approved and opened at Ado

            Ekiti and Ogotun Ekiti.

b.             Five new Model Nursery/Primary Schools were established at a cost of N75,123,812.70 Naira.

c.              Construction of 36 blocks of 3 classrooms in Primary Schools across the State at a total cost of N64,953,488.52 Naira.
