Saturday, July 10, 2010, no doubt, was a day of glory for Professor Olorunfemi Olaofe, as all sons and daughters of Are Ekiti, gathered at the town's hall to honour one of theirs, who through resilience, perseverance, determination and tenacity of purpose, jettisoned radio repairing, went back to school, read up to doctoral level, became a professor and appointed recently the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), University of Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Gov Oni and His DeputyJudgement of courts when delivered always have its thrills and frills, agonies and joys. Depending on which side the litigant belongs. For those whose cases have seen the positive side of the judges, victory resonates with jingles and tingles of songs and varying dance steps. Those on thee negative side grit their teeth in anger and frustration.  Failed hopes,failed expectations.

These two sides played out in Ekiti state on the 5 may 2010 when the Gubernatorial election petition tribunal delivered its judgement in an election petition filed  by the Action Congress candidate Kayode Fayemi against the victory of Engr Segun Oni during the supplementary election concluded in Ekiti  incidentally on the 5 May last year.

By a split decision with  3 judges  affirming the victory of Oni and two for Fayemi,  victory songs rent the air all over Ekiti.

The Present administration in Ekiti state under Engr Segun Oni came to power against the backdrop of indifference and or neglect of the past two elected regimes to implement a sustainable poverty alleviation strategy.  To be fair the immediate past democratic regime under Fayose implemented a  crude strategy of throwing few wads of naira notes to some ecstatic youths at bus stops, doling out some bales of “Ankara” uniforms(asoebi) to market women and teachers on  some commemorative days, or providing some kerosene stoves to some women who wondered what to cook on them.  While that regime enjoyed some short-lived popularity in the streets, poverty endured.
