Governor Segun Oni of Ekiti State has signed 690 Certificates of Occupancy since he assumed office, a figure that is comparatively higher than what previous administrations issued since the creation of the State in 1996.
The governor, who disclosed that the State government had  collaborated with a consultancy firm  to increase the rate of issuance of Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) and beef up the revenue derivable from land,  said at the official launching of Certificate of Occupancy Project on Monday at Ado Ekiti, the State capital,  that his administration was doing everything humanly possible within the law to evolve a modern system of land administration in the State.
Governor Oni who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Sikiru Tae Lawal at the event said “In an attempt to speedily increase the number of C of Os issued in the State, so as to add value to people’s life, generate revenue to finance our developmental projects and re-engineer the processing thereby giving quality and value to properties, Achiplan Consultants has been commissioned to collaborate with Government in the processing of Certificate of Occupancy”.
According to a statement issued by the Senior Executive Assistant (Media) to the Deputy Governor, Mr Joseph Ogunsemi, the appointment of a Consultant would not only facilitate issuance of C of O, it would enhance poverty alleviation, sustainable land and estate financing and massive revenue generation from land development in all settlements in the State.
Governor Oni  however assured that the cost of the Certificate of Occupancy would be relatively affordable when viewed against its importance, stressing that “ there would be a Board of Monitors to continually evaluate the performance of the project for a period f four years.  We are assured that processing of Certificate of Occupancy would be done in a couple of weeks after the normal 21 days had been given to ascertain that there exists no controversy on such properties. Government and Archiplan had reached a comfortable  sharing formular.
“Another important feature of the project is the creation of wealth for holders of the digitalized Certificate of Occupancy through effective and efficient arrangement with the Consultants financiers”
The State Commissioner for Lands, Urban & Regional Planning, Mr. Kayode Babade added that the project  would confirm security of land ( the life span of a Certificate of Occupancy is 99 years); allows for collateral security for loan facilities and easy passage of titles down as Inheritance, among others.
The Managing Consultant of Archiplan Consultants Ltd, Chief Ayo Ojebode  assured that applicants would not be subjected to unnecessary rigours saying , “Application forms for this all important and statewide exercise can be purchased at the rate of Three Thousand, Five Hundred Naira (N3,500.00) for a start (promotional price), from all branches and cash points .
“Duly completed application forms, having been processed and found worthy of issuance of C of O shall indeed be so certified and signed by the Governor and the C of O shall be delivered to the successful applicant within 30 days of full payment of the Government approved  processing fee having been duly advertised for clearance in accordance with the law. Payment could be in three instalments for ease of payments”
Chairman, Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ayodele Ajayi commended the State Government for the initiatives, saying would bring succor to the people and boost the revenue of the government.
