A coalition of Non Governmental Organisations in Ekiti State, Movement for Peace and Good Governance in Ekiti (MOPEGO) has raised the alarm over alleged plot by some disgruntled members of the Action Congress (AC) in the State to disrupt the Local Government elections scheduled for December 20.

Rising from its emergency meeting in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, MOPEGO, in a statement signed by its Coordinator, Dr. Michael Adekola alleged that miscreants are already being recruited from Kogi, Delta and Ondo States for the purpose of causing mayhem during the council polls.

"We wish to alert the peace loving people of Ekiti State and the security agents of the sinister plot being spear-headed by some disgruntled members of the AC in the State to cause mayhem during the forthcoming local government elections.

"It has been learnt on good authority that miscreants are now being recruited from Kogi, Delta and Ondo States and are to be brought to Ekiti State two days to the elections.
"These miscreants that are to be used as polling agents for two of the political parties that are participating in the polls, have the mandate of causing chaos at the various polling units so as to create the impression that the elections were marred with violence. Top
functionaries of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) have also been marked for attack on the Election Day," MOPEGO alleged.

While calling on the State Government to provide adequate security before, during and after the polls, MOPEGO said; "Ekiti people are eagerly waiting for democratic governance at the grassroot level and no antics of some disgruntled few should be allowed to stall the electoral processes already going on."

On the non-participation of AC in the elections, the group described it as normal in a democracy, saying; "One of the beauties of democracy is that it allows for choice. No individual or political party is compelled to participate in elections; participation is a matter of choice. Therefore, that AC is not taking part in the council polls is
not going to be of any effect.

"In any event, there are over 50 political parties in Nigeria today and AC is just one of them. And if the party has opted for the choice of not participating, there should be no noise about that. After all, parties have been boycotting elections from time immemorial without any effect on the outcome of such elections."

Urging peaceful conduct of the polls, the group called on SIEC to conduct an election that would be a benchmark for future elections in Nigeria.
