Traditional rulers in Ekiti State have expressed their support for the State Government’s decision to retain The University of Education, Ikere Ekiti (TUNEDIK) in Ikere-Ekiti, adding that; “if the Government desires to establish a new College of Education, it should be established in another Community to ensure even distribution of amenities across the State.
This was contained in a
communiqué signed by the Chairman of the State Traditional Council and
the Arinjale of Ise-Ekiti, Oba Adetunji Ajayi at the end of the
Council’s 114th statutory meeting held on 26th January, 2010.The traditional rulers, who urged students of University of Education Ikere Ekiti who were asked to resume at Ifaki Ekiti should go back to Ikere to resume at the University of Education, added that; “the State Government should return all the moveable assets taken from the University of Education, Ikere -Ekiti to Ifaki Ekiti to University o f Education, Ikere Ekiti.” The communiqué read; “The State Traditional Council deliberated extensively on the establishment of The University of Education Ikere Ekiti and State College of Education. It took into consideration the submission of the Ikere Community and the relevant sections of the Law establishing The University of Education Ikere Ekiti and resolved as follows: “That as at date, as far as the Law is concerned there is only one Institution existing and that is The University of Education Ikere Ekiti. The College of Education is no longer existing in Ekiti State since the Law that established TUNEDIK had also repealed the Law establishing the College of Education Ikere Ekiti. It was therefore resolved that The University of Education Ikere Ekiti should remain in Ikere Ekiti. “That since the College of Education is no longer in existence in the eye of the Law, if the Government desires to establish a new College of Education, it should be established in another Community to ensure even distribution of amenities across the State. “That the Government should return all the moveable assets taken from the University of Education, Ikere Ekiti to Ifaki Ekiti to University o f Education, Ikere Ekiti. “That the students of University of Education Ikere Ekiti who were asked to resume at Ifaki Ekiti should go back to Ikere to resume at the University of Education. “That as promised, Ikere Community should give necessary support to the Government in the running of the Institution by maintaining the peace and providing the staff and the students enabling Environment for an excellent academic pursuit.” It would be recalled that TUNEDIK was established in January, 20, 2008 as the 31st state University and the 92nd University in Nigeria. The University formally took off on the 16th of May, 2008 as an upgrade of the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti. The intention of government then was that the College will be phased out for the University because the National University Commission (NUC) regulation of not allowing universities to award NCE is clear and remains still in force. |
