Ekiti State Government has called on leaders of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) both at the State and national levels to ensure the immediate resolution of the internal crisis within the State chapter of the union, adding that;
“the State government remained committed to the welfare of the judicial
workers and the union should appreciate this gesture by avoiding
unnecessary industrial action.” The State Attorney General and
Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Gboyega Oyewole, said in a statement
issued in Ado-Ekiti today, that regardless of any position taken by
JUSUN on the industrial action, the government remained committed to
the timely conclusion of negotiation with the union, with a view to
reviewing and improving the welfare of the judicial workers. Oyewole,
who said the government has refrained itself from interfering in the
internal crisis of the State chapter of JUSUN added that; “It has never
been the attitude of the government to interfere in the internal affair
of any trade union even when there is palpable division within such
union.” The Attorney General urged politicians in the State to desist
from misinforming the public through sponsored media reports, saying;
“It is imperative that we clarify the deliberate misinformation
sponsored in The Nation newspaper of today, December 9, 2009 that a
national officer of JUSUN was conveyed to the Ekiti State Judiciary
Complex on Tuesday in a car marked EKGH 72. Contrary to this report,
the said officer, as revealed by our investigation was actually
conveyed in a vehicle marked EKSJ 74, belonging to the State chairman
of JUSUN.” Speaking further, Oyewole said; “For the avoidance of doubt,
the State Government has shown enough commitment to the resolution of
the judicial workers’ industrial action by being one of the first
States in the country to constitute a high powered committee to look
into JUSUN demands. “The committee, which is already looking into the
financial implication of the New Salary Structure for the judiciary
staff in the State, is headed by the State Acting Chief Judge, Justice
Silas Oyewole. “It was in recognition and appreciation of the good
faith and commitment demonstrated by the government to JUSUN that the
union called off its industrial action even when the strike action is
still going on in many States of the federation. “This was applauded
nationwide, and particularly the opposition Action Congress (AC), in a
very rare gesture hailed the State government for this feat. “We
therefore appeal to leaders of JUSUN both at the State and national
levels to see to the immediate resolution of the crisis within the
union in Ekiti State and the recognition of the gesture of the
government through its commitment to judicial workers’ welfare by
avoiding unnecessary industrial action.”
