Ekiti State Government has renamed the Community High School, Iro-Ekiti, Gbonyin Local Government Area of the State after the late Chairman of the Hospital Management Board (HMB), Dr. Sola Babalola.
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Wale Ojo-Lanre said in a statement that Governor Oni, who made this known at Iro-Ekiti during the burial of Dr. Babalola on Saturday, described the late HMB boss as a selfless politician, who was more concerned about the development of his community than personal gains.
Dr. Babalola, a one-time Commissioner for Health in the State died on Saturday, January 9, 2010 in a ghastly motor accident.
Paying glowing tribute to the late HMB chairman, Governor Oni noted that he (Dr. Babalola) was particular about the construction of the 16 kilometres Isinbode-Iro-Afin-Akoko road project since during 2007 electioneering campaign, adding that; “I am glad that my administration was able to complete the road project during the lifetime of Dr. Babalola.”
His words; “Dr. Babalola demonstrated a lot of commitment to his people through various selfless services, which led to the construction of the 16 kilometres Isinbode-Iro-Afin-Akoko road. That road was very dear to him and he never rested until it was constructed by this administration.
“We have decided to immortalise Dr. Babalola because we believe that it is therefore important that people, who contributed to the development of the society are immortalised so as to encourage others.
“Though his death is painful but if one puts in perspective the quality of life that he lived and the contributions that he made to the development of Iro-Ekiti, the medical profession and Ekiti State in general, there is every cause for us to celebrate him even as we continue to pray for the repose of his soul.”
While inspecting the Community High School named after Dr. Babalola and the town’s Comprehensive Health Centre in company of the State Deputy Governor, Dr. Sikiru Tae Lawal preparatory to the massive rehabilitation expected to commence at the two government institutions within the next few weeks Governor Oni pledged more government presence in the community.
Also speaking during the burial, Dr. Lawal, who eulogised the late Dr. Babalola said that the people of Ekiti State and medical practitioners would miss the selfless services of the deceased, who he described as a thoroughbred professional.
