Minister
of State for Energy (Gas), Hon. Babatunde Odusina has urged Nigerians
to do all they can to protect the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation (NNPC) pipelines and other facilities against act of
vandalism, saying; “the facilities are our national assets that must be
protected for the good of all.”
Odusina who made this call while commissioning the new NNPC Mega Station in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital described the location of the NNPC Mega Station in Ekiti State as a worthy business gesture, which must be utilized optimally.
He said the Station would afford the people of Ekiti the opportunity to enjoy the excellent services offered by NNPC – Retail across the country, adding that in other state capitals where the mega stations are operational, the stations are popular especially for the sale of genuine, unadulterated products, use of reliable gauge and competitive products prices.
Speaking on the process of bringing the mega station to Ekiti, Odusina disclosed that he had to personally put pressure on top functionaries of the NNPC to commence the construction.
“The station was to have been built in Ekiti three years ago, but the government then frustrated the efforts of the NNPC. But when I assumed office, I immediately swung into action, bearing in mind the resolve of State Governor, Engr. Segun Oni to attract as many federal institutions as possible to the state.
“The result of that resilience on my part and the vision of the governor is what we are witnessing here today,” Odusina said.
Describing the handover of the of the mega station as yet another success story in the policy of deregulation of the downstream sector of the Nigerian oil and gas industry which was embarked upon a couple of years ago, the minister said; “The central argument in favour of deregulation then and which is still relevant now is that the opening up of the industry will induce competition among emerging sector players and bring about a regime of operational efficiency which will in turn be capable f affecting a downward pressure on products prices. I am delighted that the people of Ekiti State will start to enjoy this benefit of deregulation given the fact that products prices in the NNPC Retail stations across the country are the lowest.”
Earlier in his address, Governor Oni, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Energy, Engr. Bisi Aje said the opening of the mega station would afford motorists and other artisans in the state unhindered access to petroleum products not only in the right quantity and quality but also at the barest minimum cost.
His words; “These facilities being opened today would have been constructed, commissioned and put into use about three years ago. This would have improved the socio-economic situation of the state. “Apparently, if the previous administration shared the vision of the present administration, the vast majority of our people would have long been enjoying what is considered their right, which has for long eluded them. It was in light of this that the governor painstakingly put all machineries in place to put things in their right perspectives so as to ensure improved living standard for the people.”
Scores of people at the occasion were full of praises fro the Oni Administration for making the Mega Station a reality |
